Famed for its elephants and baobab trees, this lodge, situated high on a panoramic escarpment in Tarangire National Park, is in the perfect position for guests to enjoy spectacular views of the woodland savanna.
Home to an estimated 3,000 elephants, the area is renowned for having the largest elephant population of all the parks in Tanzania. Sightings of lion, leopard and cheetah, as well as the rare African wild dog and herds of wildebeest and zebras, are also common.
For the best game viewing, visit between July and October — the dry season — when the animals congregate to drink from the Tarangire River, one of the few sources of permanent water in the area.
Located around six miles from the main park entrance, Arusha airport is approximately a two-hour drive from the lodge, while Kilimanjaro International airport is about 3.5 hours (103 miles).
Most visitors pre-book their excursions, including tailormade game drives or bush walks with an experienced guide, but it’s also possible to watch game right from the comfort of the terrace.
This family-run lodge — the oldest in the park — offers comfortable, affordable accommodation with 35 tents and five bungalows.
The tents feature a thatched roof, private veranda, wide screened windows and bathrooms with hot water boiled by solar heaters, while all five circular bungalows offer triple rooms making them a great option for families or groups of travellers on a budget.
Built with shaded verandas, thick walls, large windows and thatched roofs — helping to keep them cool — bungalows also overlook a large water hole. All bedrooms have mosquito nets and ensuite bathrooms with solar-heated water.
In the al fresco dining room, guests can sample a wide variety of cuisine, with early dinners available for children, while the bar is a popular meeting place for sundowners. There’s also a lounge where guests can read, play a game or use the free wi-fi.
Other facilities include a large swimming pool, a splash pool for children and spa treatments, including massages and pedicures, at the Patulivu spa. Overlooking the river, the spa facility makes the ideal platform for early morning yoga or private early evening sundowners.
