Shu’mata Luxury Camp, Tanzania

Shu’mata Luxury Camp is set in the traditional Maasai region of South Amboseli, famed for its huge elephant herds. This isn’t a national park; it’s tribal country, where Africa’s wildlife coexists with the cattle of the Maasai. The camp is situated atop a hill, facing both the scenic Seven Sisters hills and Mount Kilimanjaro. Shu’mata, in the language of the Maasai, means ‘in the clouds’ or ‘heaven’.

Five comfortable safari tents — each equipped with en suite bathrooms with open air showers — feature traditional beds, a dressing table, a Hemingway-style hanging cupboard and a lockable trunk for personal belongings, creating an atmosphere of the safari life of the 1920s. This barren land, scattered with acacia forests and seasonal swamps stretching to the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, is tucked away from the busy areas of northern Tanzania, offering a peaceful alternative to larger-scale tourism.
