Africa Tanzania

Rivertrees Country Inn, Tanzania

True to all the delightful images its name conjures up, Rivertrees is an idyllic haven, as cool and quiet as the shaded waters that weave through it. Set amid sunlight-dappled lawns, the resort is tucked away outside the busy town of Arusha in Northern Tanzania and looks out towards snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest and most famous summit.

The property is a rustic country estate and former coffee plantation spanning 10 lush acres, and the 34 rooms — including the sumptuous River House, two River Cottages, the original Farm House with four en suite rooms and the Garden Rooms — are hidden among trees and thickets, scattered around river bends.

Indulge in a massage, take a dip in the pool, or simply sit and watch the river, drink in hand, as it meanders lazily past the decking. And when adventure calls, visitors to the nearby Arusha National Park are rewarded with flamingo-studded lakes, groves of grazing buffalo and thick emerald forest leading up to the blown-out crater of Mount Meru. Also close by is the spectacular Lake Duluti — an oasis of glassy water and a birdwatcher’s paradise; its abundant wildlife is best witnessed from the comfort of a canoe. Those seeking a cultural excursion can join a village tour showcasing local life.

Rivertrees’ all-day restaurant and bar specialises in gourmet country cuisine, and many of the ingredients are grown in its gardens. The recipes are based on tried-and-tested old family favourites, including pizzas fresh from a wood-burning oven, all finished off with the best of the region’s locally grown coffee.

Just 40 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport or an hour from Arusha Airport in the other direction, Rivertrees makes for a great stop-off point on any of the myriad safari adventures usually circling Arusha and Kilimanjaro — or as an off-the-beaten-track destination in its own right. It’s a natural oasis of unpretentious, historic charm that’s proud to have hosted the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, as well as two German presidents, primatologist Jane Goodall and several other notable visitors.
