Winding its way along the border with Zimbabwe, Zambia’s mighty Zambezi River offers breathtaking scenery, majestic wildlife and world-famous sights — including Victoria Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just 11 miles upstream from the thundering falls, past the historical town of Livingstone, lies the tranquil oasis of The River Club. Run in a hands-on fashion by owner Peter Jones, the boutique lodge is steeped in history and offers a taste of old-world luxury.
Eleven spacious suites — all with private decks and floor-to ceiling glass doors — overlook a loop in the river. Three rooms offer private plunge pools, and a two-bedroom villa is also on offer. Guests can wake up to stunning views of pods of hippos and the Zambezi National Park and, later, relax in a ball-and-claw bath watching the setting sun.
Voted one of the ‘Top 10 Cool Pools of the World’ by The Guardian, the lodge’s swimming pool appears almost to be a part of the river itself. Its secluded deck is ideal for quiet relaxation, while an array of treatments at the Wellness Centre will leave spa-goers feeling rejuvenated. For the more energetic, the running track, gym and all-weather tennis court are ideal spots to while away the day.
The restored Edwardian homestead houses a cosy lounge, dining room and library, as well as a verandah where breakfasts and teas are served. Midday meals are often eaten in the tree-dotted gardens, while the gazebo and Summer House are secluded spots for private dining.
Guests can explore the area’s charms with a tour of Victoria Falls, a sundowner cruise or an angling trip to catch the fearsome tigerfish. There’s also the option to try whitewater rafting, bungee jumping, abseiling, canoeing and flights over the falls. The area is rich in culture and wildlife: hippos and elephants are often spotted and birdlife is prolific.
Set amid 50 acres of land, home to sprawling gardens within a fenced boundary, The River Club provides the perfect setting for younger travellers to explore. A ‘Kids at the Club’ adventure bag encourages them to head outdoors and appreciate nature. For that perfect mix of idyllic relaxation and adventure travel, along with unbeatable sights, The River Club is the ideal destination.
