Kafue River Lodge, Zambia

Kafue River Lodge sits within 350 acres of private grounds on the banks of its namesake river, bordering the Kafue National Park. As part of the vast Lunga Luswishi Game Management Area, a range of driving, boating and walking safaris are offered to enable guests to get up close to a stunning diversity of wild animals, including waterbucks, impalas, sables, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, big cats and a huge variety of birdlife. Trips include mobile safaris to Busanga Plains — widely regarded as the jewel in Kafue’s crown — from August to November.

The lodge’s four rustic-chic chalets each open onto a teak sundeck, come with two comfy queen beds and a fireplace, and are peppered with wooden furniture handcrafted on site by Zambian carpenters. Towards the rear of every cosy dwelling is an indoor bathroom with a freestanding bath, while an outdoor shower offers spectacular views of the bushveld.

Graced by a large teak sundeck, the lodge’s main lapa (traditional thatched structure) and neighbouring bar and lounge overlook the river — the ideal place to spot the silhouettes of birds and game on the adjacent island.

Delicious meals can be enjoyed in the lapa, on the decking or outside under the velvety star-studded skies. The lodge also offers bush breakfasts, lunches and even dinners on the surrounding plains, dambos (shallow wetlands) and islands.

A campsite further upstream from the lodge is made up of four exclusive sites, each with a braai (barbecue) for al fresco feasts. There’s also a thatched lapa to lounge in, plus a cosy library to hole up in with a good book. There are some great spots for fishing across the grounds of the lodge —one of the best is just a stone’s throw from
the campsite.

Kafue River Lodge strives to educate guests on the Zambian bush, while offering an unforgettable adventure in one of the most pristine and unexplored parks in all of Africa. The lodge also prides itself on its ongoing involvement with community projects and is deeply committed to conserving its beautiful surroundings.
