Situated in the exotic Raa Atoll, in the northern part of the Maldives, this 57-acre island is 95 miles from the capital Malé, and is easily accessed by domestic flight or seaplane
The resort caters to many tastes and interests, from explorers looking for remote exotic islands to fishing enthusiasts and watersports fans. Travellers who want to indulge in rejuvenating spa treatments or those simply seeking a white-sand beach are equally accommodated for at the Furaveri Island Resort & Spa. The island is accessible via a 40-minute seaplane flight from Malé International Airport.
The resort has 107 spectacular private villas, all include day beds while some have garden, beach or sea views. Some have private pools, while others are on stilts in the lagoon itself.
The Garden Villas are nestled in lush tropical flora, just a few steps away from the beach, with a large private sundeck, semi-open bathroom and interconnecting rooms. The Beach Villas have a spacious bedroom, semi-open air bathroom with bathtub and a large beachfront wooden sundeck, plus a private dining area. The Water Villas are on stilts above the turquoise lagoon, connected to the island by a wooden walkway, which appears to float over the ocean waves. Each spacious villa has an extended decked veranda with sun loungers and an outdoor dining area.
With a view of the white-sand beach as well as the turquoise lagoon, the Beach Pool Villas all have a large beachfront garden and wooden sundeck, complemented with a cushioned day bed and sun loungers. Each villa also has a private 6m pool. Finally, there are the Dhoni Pool Villas. With a design inspired by the dhoni, the traditional Maldivian fishing boat, nestling in the vegetation on the edge of the beach overlooking the lagoon, these luxurious villas offer an experience of pure serenity, with creatively designed spaces, an en suite bathroom and a large private pool.
EATING & DRINKING
Located at the northern shore of the island, Jaafaeiy Restaurant serves cuisine from around the world, with various choices of international and continental dishes. The buffet includes live cooking stations. The restaurant also holds themed nights — think Maldivian, Thai, Mongolian and Mediterranean.
The Udhares Bar is a relaxed space, offering the chance to kick back beside the pool and enjoy the view of the Indian Ocean while sipping on a tropical drink. The evening entertainment ranges from live music and DJ nights to starlight cinema and karaoke.
Furaveri Island Resort & Spa also offers destination dining, where a special menu is served in a remote location — whether it’s a romantic candlelit dinner on the beach, a tasty seafood experience with freshly caught Maldivian lobster or a five-course menu in the lush greenery of Furaveri island. There’s also the option of in-villa dining, where a variety of European and Asian dishes, including light snacks, tasteful main courses and tempting sweet desserts, are served directly in the guest’s villa.
New to the resort from mid-September is the beachfront restaurant Raiyvilla. Guests can bask in the sunset with the impressive Asian fusion menu.
SPA & FITNESS CENTRE
Furaveri Spa is a tropical escape bathed in flowery fragrances and surrounded by flowing waters. The spa’s professional therapists provide holistic treatments with a ‘high-touch, low-tech’ approach to calm the busiest mind.
This serene world of delicate scents has a comprehensive range of facilities in a beautiful wooden interior; guests can indulge with a soothing massage or refreshing body treatment, both of which promote relaxation and renewed energy. The spa has four open-air pavilions and four air-conditioned pavilions for side-by-side treatments for two, as well as a steam bath, sauna, whirlpool bath and relaxation area.
The fitness centre is located between the tennis court and the spa. Those who want to stay in shape during their holiday will find that there’s more than enough state-of-the-art equipment — including boxing gear, badminton and tennis courts — to keep them active during their time on the island.
Furaveri Island is surrounded by two reefs with abundant marine life, including turtles, sharks, rays, barracuda, humphead wrasse, tuna and trevally, as well as colourful corals. The experienced PADI dive team is there to cater for all levels of diving know-how: beginners can get started with the ‘discover scuba diving’ course, while those with hours of diving trips under their belts can take the PADI Divemaster program. There are also exciting excursions, such as the daily dive and guided snorkelling trips.
The Dive Club Furaveri offers professional swimming courses by a certified SSI swim teacher for children and adults. There’s also catamaran sailing, jet ski rides, banana boats, fun tube, stand-up paddleboard, windsurfing and kayaking.
Finally, the Kids’ Club is home to a large sand-filled playground with a playhouse, slide and spring riders, plus a team providing entertainment including coconut painting, palm tree leaf origami and traditional singing.
