Finch Hattons Luxury Camp, Kenya

The backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro and the magnificent Chyulu Hills makes this boutique camp, in Tsavo West National Park, an enchanting base for safari-goers keen to spot the region’s famous red elephants and other wildlife, including lions and leopards.

Guests can enjoy guided safari walks and game drives with experienced rangers, visit local villages or encounter up to 500 species of birds at the camp set within 3,500sq miles of wilderness, with landscapes including swamps, natural springs, rocky peaks and rolling plains.

Voted Kenya’s leading safari lodge in 2015 and Africa’s best safari lodge for the past three years at the World Travel Awards, the camp is inspired by the life of Denys Finch Hatton, a legendary British aristocrat and the lover of Baroness Karen Blixen, who wrote about him in her book Out of Africa. Having travelled to Kenya in 1911, Hatton fell under the spell of the African wilderness and his fascination with the wildlife turned him from a big-game hunter into a renowned photographer and conservationist. He later became known as a host to the rich and famous, bringing business tycoons and British royalty into his world of luxury safaris.

The camp is designed to be minimally intrusive, offering guests stunning views from 17 luxury suites that fuse modern design and contemporary comforts with rustic charm. Reminiscent of the golden days of safari, furnishings include beautiful hardwood writing tables, intricate chandeliers and carved chests. Ensuite bathrooms feature copper tubs and showers, while creamy linens and soft lighting create a romantic ambience. Each suite also has a private deck with views of the freshwater pools that are home to hippos, crocodiles, monitor lizards and numerous species of birds.

Guests dine by candlelight with soothing classical music playing in the background. A team of chefs create six-course dinners served on china plates, paired with the finest wines in crystal-cut glasses.

The camp has an impressive spa and wellness centre, with treatments using spa brand Africology, made only from natural ingredients. The centre also has an elevated yoga deck where guests can unwind before splendid views, while the spa pool is the perfect opportunity to take refreshing dips under the Tsavo sun and spot the odd leopard and other wild game.
